Joining the gym can be a scary experience. I put off joining the gym for the longest time, as I was adamant it wasn’t for me. Having changed from a job where I was standing for a nine-hour shift to an office job, getting some exercise into my routine was necessary. I’ve now been a member for a few weeks and I’m still learning but I thought I’d gather together some of my tips for making your first foray into the gym less terrifying.
Find a gym that suits you. Picking a place where you’ll feel comfortable and productive can be difficult but do your research. I opted for a gym that didn’t tie me into a contract in case for some reason I wanted to quit. Lots of advice says to pick somewhere close to home or to work so you can’t avoid going. Just find something that suits your needs.
Take advantage of what your gym has to offer. Make sure to check and see what classes or inductions are available and do as many as possible. Inductions can help with general gym equipment as if you’re a complete novice like me; it’s good to have someone check your form so you don’t do any damage. I find classes can be loads of fun and being part of a group can help to keep you motivated.
Get the gear. Call me shallow but getting myself some new gym gear really helped to motivate me to get my ass into gear. Try H&M, Missguided or TK Maxx for some affordable gym wear that’ll help get you feeling positive. If you’re feeling a bit more spendy, Nike do some great leggings. Just find an outfit or two that makes you feel great and smash your workout.
Obviously there’s so much more to learn when it comes to the gym but these are just a few initial tips that I’ve found helped me in the beginning stages and I hope they help you too.
